Nigeria Sets Bold AI Agenda To Lead Africa’s Tech Future — NITDA DG
Nigeria is positioning itself as a leader in Africa’s Artificial Intelligence revolution.
The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, says the country is setting a bold agenda to shape the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) through innovation, inclusion, and ethical governance.
Speaking on Nigeria’s AI direction, Inuwa explained that the Federal Government’s vision aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda — which prioritizes digital transformation, industrial growth, and innovation-driven development.
Building the Foundation for AI Growth
Nigeria’s AI roadmap focuses on building strong digital infrastructure — including sovereign cloud platforms, reliable broadband access, and national datasets that reflect Nigeria’s diverse culture and identity.
A key milestone is the launch of the National Multilingual Large Language Model (LLM), designed to support Nigeria’s major languages and ensure African voices are represented in global AI systems.
Empowering Startups and Women in Tech
Through the Nigerian Startup Act, NITDA is creating an enabling environment for AI and digital startups to thrive. The DG emphasized that 40% of AI-related projects will intentionally include women, ensuring that technology growth is inclusive and equitable.
This move will open new opportunities in digital entrepreneurship, AI research, and creative tech innovations across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.
AI for National Development
Nigeria plans to deploy AI across key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing, and education.
In healthcare, AI can help improve diagnostics and patient care.
In agriculture, it can predict weather patterns and improve food yield.
In education, it enables personalized learning and digital inclusion.
The broader goal is to augment human effort and increase productivity without displacing jobs.
Balancing Innovation with Ethics
NITDA also announced the development of a National AI Governance Framework — co-created with industry stakeholders — to ensure that innovation grows responsibly while protecting citizens’ data, privacy, and trust.
According to the DG, AI adoption in Nigeria must “serve humanity without bias, exclusion, or exploitation.”
